This project is looking a the R language and its performance. While R is rapidly growing usage, it has noted performance issue in both speed and memory usage. We are looking at how the design of R causes these issue and ways to improve them.
As part of examination of R, we have been looking both at R’s performance relative to other languages, but also within the packages in the Bioconductor project. R is playing a growing role in biostatistics work, but has a critical need to scale better to accelerate bioinformatics research.
Virtual Machine Design
As part of our research we are looking towards the development of a virtual machine that will be tuned to the needs of the R language and the kind of programs written in it.
